We visited the beautiful Downham Hall in Downham. It is located in a tranquil spot between Billericay and Wickford in Essex. A family run boutique country house hotel and wedding venue, nestled in the Essex countryside with views across the rolling fields. Downham Hall offers breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as their Afternoon Tea, which runs from 12pm to 3pm, Wednesday thru to Saturday. They also host a number of events throughout the year in their Marquee.

The Savouries

The savouries at Downham Hall includes a selection of freshly made sandwiches using a mix of breads. We enjoyed roast ham & mustard, smoked applewood cheddar & onion chutney, smoked salmon, cream cheese & cucumber, egg mayo and roasted vegetables & hummus. The sandwiches include some of your classic flavours you would expect to see at an afternoon tea, along with some more interesting and unusual flavours. These are accompanied by a warm sausage roll and Arancini, which was absolutely delicious and made a very nice addition

The Sweet Stuff

The scones at Downham Hall are huge, you receive one fruit and one plain, served warm with Cornish clotted cream and Tiptree Strawberry Jam. These were lovely, they had a good crusty top and soft centre. Alongside your scones are a selection of delicate cakes and patisserie items. The elderflower and raspberry tart was a taste explosion and my favourite of the day! The chocolate and vodka Battenberg cake was super moist!

Your afternoon tea is accompanied by unlimited tea or coffee.

The afternoon tea was perfect portion wise and it was a really lovely experience in a stunning location. I will certainly visit again. It is easy to see why it features on our list of The Best Afternoon Teas in Essex.
