We visited the The Barns at Cressing Temple to sample the Savoury Afternoon Tea at Tiptree Tea Rooms in Essex. Already featured on our list of the Best Afternoon Teas in Essex for their Traditional Afternoon Tea. There are 9 Tiptree Tea Rooms across Essex. They are based at Tiptree, Dedham, Heybridge Basin, Writtle, Saffron Walden, Cressing Temple, Billericay, Osea, Chelmsford and they also have a tea room in Southwold in Suffolk.

At each of the Tiptree Tea Rooms in Essex, you can indulge in a beautifully presented afternoon tea served on a china cake stand with freshly made sandwiches, freshly baked sultana scones, clotted cream and Tiptree preserves with a selection of individual fresh patisserie items. Included is a choice of unlimited tea or filter coffee and a soft drink.

The Barns, Cressing Temple

‘The Barns’ at Cressing Temple is a bright and airy tea room with views over the Essex countryside. Offering a wide range of homemade meals using fresh and local ingredients and of course their afternoon teas. They have recently introduced their amazing ‘Savoury Afternoon Tea’ which I was very excited to try. Visitors can also visit the fascinating and outstanding 13th century barns on site and admire the Tudor herb garden which offers a tranquil atmosphere and a chance to see and learn about the huge variety of current and historic herbs..

The tea room has plenty of free parking on site and the routes/pathways are suitable for wheelchair users or visitors with limited mobility. Just a short drive from Cressing Temple visitors can also find the Braintree Freeport Designer Shopping Village.

The Savoury Afternoon Tea at Tiptree Tea Rooms

You receive three tiers of delicious savoury treats served on a traditional china cake stand. One of the great aspects of the afternoon teas at Tiptree Tea Rooms is the fact you get to choose your own sandwich fillings. This is perfect for any fussy eaters and ensures you get a sandwich flavour you like. The sandwiches were freshly prepared and generously filled. There are many fillings to choose from, for instance:

• Butcher’s Ham accompanied by a Tiptree English Wholegrain Mustard.
• Mature Cheddar accompanied by a Tiptree Onion Relish.
• Coronation Turkey made using Tiptree Mango Chutney.
• Brie accompanied by a Tiptree Hot Gooseberry Chutney.
• Tuna and mayonnaise.
• Egg Mayonnaise.
• Prawn Cocktail with Marie Rose Sauce.
• Smoked Salmon, Cream Cheese & Cucumber.
• Vegan Cheese accompanied by a Tiptree Onion Relish.

On the top tier was a lovely selection of savoury items served warm. We enjoyed a lovely slice of quiche, a sausage roll and two mini pastries. The pastry pinwheels were absolutely amazing and also vegetarian! I could easily eat a plate of these! These were served with Tiptree Onion Relish.
In addition, we enjoyed a huge cheese scone per person, which was served warm and incredibly moist inside, with cream cheese and Gooseberry Chutney. The scones had a lovely crust on top and were very cheesy in flavour. There were an absolute delight and its easy to see why Tiptree Cheese Scones are so popular!

My thoughts

In conclusion I really enjoyed every element of our savoury afternoon tea at Tiptree Tea Rooms. It was an excellent portion size, even my partner (who never gets filled up) commented on the generous portions! It was so tasty and I can’t recommend trying this enough! Every element was delicious and I’d definitely go back to have this again! At £16 per head, it is also incredible value.
