I Should Be So Lucky The Musical Review

I attended the press night of I Should Be So Lucky The Musical at London’s New Wimbledon Theatre. A fun filled new Stock Aitken Waterman musical featuring music from pop royalty including Kylie Minogue, Rick Astley, Jason Donovan, Bananarama and more. We even saw Pete Waterman at the press night, which was cool! The show is touring the UK until May 2024. So here is my ‘I Should Be So Lucky The Musical Review’ at New Wimbledon Theatre:

There is no denying that I Should Be So Lucky is very entertaining, a little chaotic in places, laugh out loud funny and full to the brim with classic pop hits you know and love. This is the kind of musical you can switch off your brain, sit back and just enjoy the fun happening on stage.

The Story

The story kicks off with Ella (portrayed by Lucie-Mae Sumner), a jittery bride awaiting her big day, who conjures up Kylie Minogue in her imagination as a sort of ‘fairy godmother’ figure for some much-needed guidance (with Kylie digitally appearing on a huge mirror screen throughout the production). However, Ella’s joy turns to sorrow when she’s left stranded at the altar by her groom, leading to an impromptu honeymoon trip to Turkey with her loyal bridal party, where the real adventure begins.

Meanwhile, Nathan (played by Billy Roberts), realising his grave error, embarks on a journey to Turkey with his best man in a bid to win back his jilted bride. But time may not be on his side, as Ella finds solace in the charming Nadeem (portrayed by Matthew Croke), a hotel staff member ready to help her move on from her heartbreak.

As the audience joins the hilarious cast on this whirlwind honeymoon escapade, the plot takes numerous unexpected twists and turns, veering into mildly bizarre territory at times. The musical component is a standout, featuring a medley of beloved pop hits. Some of these rather ‘shoe-horned’ in, in places, often leading to unintentional comedic moments that add to the overall charm of the show.

The Characters

I absolutely loved the characters and had some real favourites: Michael (played by Scott Paige), part of the bridal party, was just brilliant and his rendition of Toy Boy alongside Hassan (Ralph Bogard), the Turkish Masseuse was uproariously funny, their on-stage chemistry truly shining through.

However, the standout moment belonged to Kayla Carter’s Bonnie, the bridesmaid, whose rendition of “You’ll Never Stop Me Loving You” was simply breathtaking. It was a rare, but beautiful, serious interlude in the midst of the show.

Among the comedic highlights, Jamie Chapman’s Spencer stole the show with his infectious charm and humor. Giovanni Spano’s Ash, the best man, and his dynamic with Nathan, the groom, also provided plenty of laughs.

And let’s not forget Ella, the bride, whose impeccable voice and captivating performance added another layer of brilliance to the production. She had great chemistry with her bridal party who all delivered their own brilliant performances throughout.

My thoughts on the show

This show is perfect for unwinding and simply revelling in its entertainment value. ‘I Should Be So Lucky: The Musical’ guarantees to plaster a grin on your face throughout its entirety. Bursting at the seams with beloved pop tunes from the Hit Factory, fantastic dance numbers, stellar vocals, uproarious comedy and a generous serving of cheesy charm, it’s a recipe for laughter and enjoyment. The audience’s enthusiastic response, marked by continuous laughter and applause, affirmed its undeniable success. Personally, the music and choreography stole the spotlight, with memorable performances and cherished songs. While it may not top my list of all-time favourites, ‘I Should Be So Lucky The Musical’ offers harmless, infectious fun that will keep you humming and tapping your toes long after the final curtain.
